The Division of Pharmacology is based on the 7th floor at the Medical School, and the head is Prof Rosenkranz.
The staff of the Division of Pharmacology would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and to inform you that we offer a 24 hour toxicology service from our Tygerberg Poison Information Centre. Please feel free to call us at any time for any toxicology queries you have. Our Poison Information Centre staff answer calls nationally from the public, as well as from medical professionals (doctors, pharmacists, nurses).
The spectrum of queries range from drug overdose management, poisoning (eg. herbicides, organophosphates, etc.), snake bites, scorpion bites, accidental ingestion of various household substances by children eg. plants, moth balls, super glue, Handy Andy etc.
The Poison Information Centre is run by Dr Joy Veale. Dr G Muller is a part time consultant with many years of experience in the field of snakes, scorpions and spiders etc. After hour calls in the Poison Information Centre are also shared by staff from the Department of Emergency Medicine.

The Division of Pharmacology also offer the toxicology laboratory service where blood and urine specimens from hospitalized patients are processed, for example drug levels in the case of an overdose. If the computers in the hospital are off line, then you may phone the lab directly for results at extension 6168.
Research activities of the Department include pharmacokinetics of ARVs and TB drugs, in vitro drug metabolism, bioanalysis of various drugs, chemical synthesis of novel potential ARVs, and lung surfactant.
Postgraduate courses offered by the Division of Pharmacology include BSc Hons Pharmacology, MSc Pharmacology and courses in Pharmaceutical Medicine.
